Ken claws at 'childish' May: New outburst over cat could cost Justice Secretary his job

Kenneth Clarke narrowly escaped the axe yesterday – but looked to have sealed his fate in a future Cabinet reshuffle after attacking Theresa May’s criticism of the Human Rights Act as ‘child-like’ and ‘laughable’.

The veteran Justice Secretary said the Home Secretary had made a ‘parody’ of the law after claiming a key reason an illegal immigrant avoided deportation was because he had a pet cat.

Downing Street is incandescent that Mr Clarke gave ‘Catgate’, as it is known in Westminster, fresh momentum by ridiculing a more senior member of the Cabinet.  Read More
